Two details matter for planning. HMRC uses the CY-2 rule:\u00a0mandation\u00a0is assessed against the return filed two years before the\u00a0mandation\u00a0date. For the April 2026 cohort, that is the 2024\/25\u00a0Self Assessment\u00a0return. And once a taxpayer enters MTD, they stay in for a minimum of three consecutive tax years regardless of whether income\u00a0subsequently\u00a0drops below the threshold.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The practical consequence for practices is a ratchet effect: every year, more clients come in, fewer come out.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
