Method

How the calculator works

The calculator turns your answers into a yearly count of people to verify, company searches, high-risk clients, non-UK residents and people under ongoing monitoring. It then applies each provider's published price list to those counts, year by year, and adds any platform, plan or licence fee.

Volumes used for every provider

  • Clients in year y = starting clients × (1 + growth)y−1, rounded to the nearest whole client. New clients are the increase on the year before; year 1 counts every client.
  • People to verify = new individual clients + (new company clients × directors or owners per company), plus existing clients when a re-verification falls due.
  • Company searches = new company clients (plus re-verified companies).
  • High-risk and non-UK checks = people to verify × the percentages you enter, rounded.
  • People monitored = every individual client + every director or owner on your list that year, if ongoing monitoring is switched on.

Rules applied to every provider

  • Only prices on the provider's own website are used. Where something you need has no published price, the result lists it under “Not priced from published information” instead of guessing.
  • Where a provider offers more than one plan, the calculator costs the cheapest plan that meets your inputs and names it.
  • Totals exclude VAT unless you choose “Incl. VAT”, which adds 20% to every line. Money is rounded to the penny, half up.
  • Negotiated discounts, free trials, introductory offers and supervision fees (HMRC or your professional body) are not included.

Not costed: SmartSearch, First AML, Credas, ID-Pal, Legl, Zinc and Creditsafe (quote on request); Xama and NameScan (prices not published in a form that can be costed); ComplyCube, Sumsub and Veriff (US-dollar pricing); Ignition (plan fee not published). If a provider's prices have changed, use “Report a price change” under any result and we will recheck the source.

Questions about AML check costs

How much does an AML check cost in the UK?

Published per-person prices for an electronic identity check range from about £3.50 to £15 before discounts, and many providers add a monthly, annual or licence fee on top. Because the fees and what is included differ, the all-in cost for your client numbers is a better comparison than the per-check price. Use the calculator above to see the total for each provider.

What does the calculator include?

Identity checks for every person you need to verify, company searches, PEP and sanctions screening, ongoing monitoring, enhanced checks for high-risk clients and risk-assessment software, each only where you ask for it and only where the provider publishes a price. Platform, plan and licence fees are included. VAT is excluded unless you choose to show it.

Why do some results say “not priced”?

The calculator only uses prices that a provider publishes. If you need something, such as biometric checks or company searches, and the provider does not publish a price for it, the result lists it as not priced. That total is therefore lower than you would actually pay, so compare it with care.

Why do some providers show “partial price list”?

Some providers publish only part of their pricing, for example a starting monthly fee and a headline check price, with discounts and extras agreed on request. The calculator uses what is published, so the real price could be higher or lower.

Why are some well-known providers missing?

Providers that only quote on request, publish prices in US dollars, or do not publish enough to cost a practice are listed under the method section rather than given a guessed figure. If a provider starts publishing UK prices, we will add it.

Do I also pay HMRC or professional body fees?

If HMRC supervises your firm for anti-money laundering, it charges its own registration and annual fees. Firms supervised by a professional body such as ICAEW, ACCA or AAT pay that body's fee instead. The calculator does not include supervision fees.
